I suppose it's widely known that it is not a romance, but I hadn't expected it, you know? There's dog strangling, so. much. violence, hatred of babies (babies really suffer in this novel, you know? They're born and the characters are like WELL I HATE *THAT*), and just ... so much muchness.

I've been reading nearly all my life, saving those few years when I was impossibly lazy and also under the age of four.
The politicisation of taking care of the world we live in is a great tragedy; it should be a natural priority to us. Taking care of it, takes care of us.
Did it make me want to abandon the world to retreat to peaceful lands and a barren room with a cross and the ever present scent of feral cat pee? No. Did it plant a book idea in my brain? Oh yes, yes it did indeed.
