the writing diaries

ohhh it’s a SCI-FI | writing diaries #1

It’s time. I sat down one weekend this October and promised myself that I was going to hit a writing goal if it killed me.

Reader, I turned my phone off and, for a dramatic flourish, hurled it across the room.

I wrote and wrote and wrote and wrote and finally, just before midnight. I hit it. The words I wanted were written.

And I feel like a Changed Woman. And I’d like to introduce you to the current projects:

PROJECT #1: VIKINGS BUT ALSO NOT BUT ALSO SCI-FI

in 2014/2015 I wrote a trilogy of novels based on a fantasy viking-esque world. It was very, shall we say, dramatic. At my peak, I wrote 10,000 words in one day and was hallucinating the scenes I was writing – they felt so real to me. Also: very gory. And dramatic. Did I mention dramatic? I definitely cried writing the middle one.

Those books have never been published – or, for that matter – edited. However, the characters live on in my head. And recently, probably in the shower, I had the brainwave of: I’VE GOT IT! I HAVE THE SOLUTION! I CAN WRITE THIS!

I’m moving it to a different genre and it just might work! Sadly, I’ve had to say goodbye to the dragons. OR HAVE I???

Why am I excited? Because I lowkey love the characters and the main character is delightfully prickly and there’s a side character of a judgmental little robot that I think could add that je ne sais quoi to the book.

Status: Draft zero.

this isn’t a picture of me writing (GASP) but is from my wedding where the flash on the instant camera took all depth from my face and made me look joker-esque. i’m sharing it with you here

PROJECT # 2: SCI-FI NOVELLA SERIES

Look, I’ve already written two novellas. They’re done. It’s the third one that I’ve had trouble with. I’m not sure whether I want to have a trilogy or a series of five novellas and it all depends on the next one.

Picture this: a stern and rigid rule-abider thrown out of her community and an eager botanist-reprobate-Investigator solving crimes together and falling in love while hijinks ensue. Each novella has a trope. Or at least, I THINK it does.

Why am I excited? The chemistry between the main leads. I’m dying. I love them both and I need them to be happy but I need hijinks to ensue to test them both but they have to be good hijinks, you know? Worthy hijinks.

Status: Novellas 1 and 2 complete, 3rd novella zero draft waiting.

this is Bernard, he keeps me company DON’T DIE ON ME BERNARD

PROJECT #3: CONTEMPORARY FARCE

Oh ho ho, this is my comedy. The only issue is … it’s not funny enough yet. I’d inserted dual POVs but I think I’m going to stick to one main character because pfft, let’s make my life simple, shall we?

Comedy is fun, I like amusing myself by writing it. But this hasn’t clicked yet. I’m waiting for it to click. Picture James Herriot crossed with Wodehouse crossed with The Office. This is what I’m going for. I have not reached it yet, but that’s the aim.

Why am I excited? The hijinks. The side-eye. Muhahahaha.

Status: Draft zero/brainstorming.

again, a photo of not me not writing – but a photo of a cup I acquired. you’re welcome. my content is VERY good.

OTHERS …

There are always more stories to be told and I’ve got three complete manuscripts of various sizes that need to be re-written or rehauled or republished (hello, sequel to Our Intrepid Heroine) but the stars are not aligned.

One day, they shall be. But not this day.

what are you writing/reading/mooching around? do any of these projects whet your appetite? I know – I know, forgive the alarming lack of unicorns …

Thoughts? Opinions? Kittens? Pop 'em below and let's chat ...
